# Initialize configuration

> Create Midway's midway.yaml configuration file

Run `midway init` to create `midway.yaml` in the current working directory:

```bash theme={null}
midway init
```

The setup prompts for optional credentials for Slack, Discord, Telegram, ntfy, and email over SMTP. Press Enter to skip a service. To skip email setup, leave the SMTP server prompt empty. SMTP passwords are entered with masked input; the saved credentials are stored in plain text in `midway.yaml`, so protect the file.

Midway also supports local desktop notifications, which do not require credentials. By default, all notification methods are selected; external services need their credentials to deliver notifications. See [configuration](/config) to customize destinations and timing, and the [notification guides](/notifications/local) for provider setup.

If `midway.yaml` already exists in the current directory, `midway init` asks whether to overwrite it. Confirming replaces the file; it does not merge the new answers into the existing configuration.
